Growing Up

It is funny how as you grow up the thing that you want to be when you grow up changes so much. When I loved to draw. Looking back my most common objects that I drew were policemen, police cars, firemen, firetrucks, and Patrick Roy holding up the Stanley Cup. I don't distinctly remember ever wanting to be any of these things. The first occupation I remember really striving to be was an astronaut. I was fascinated by the worlds away from this world. Although being scared of water, I'm not sure that I would be able to hand open space. Once for my birthday I met Steve MacLean which was a pretty awesome experience for a kid. Maybe not every kid wants to go hear an astronaut speak on his birthday, but that was right up my alley. I also used to go to dad's office where I could access the internet (since we didn't have it at home) and print off pictures of Mars and other spacey stuff.
Then there was the period of jr. high and high school where I didn't really have any dream job. In high school I loved stuff like geography, learning about the way things worked in the world. About poverty, injustice, greed, and people. Sometimes I thought maybe it would be cool to become a teacher.
I went to university not really knowing what I wanted to do or become. Its always awkward being asked what you want to be and 3 years later still having the same "I don't know answer". I'm doing a double major in environmental science and international development studies (my new doctor asked if I could have picked something a little shorter). I have no idea what I'm going to do with the rest of my life, but I've definitely learned alot of things through school. I think that kid in me who wanted to help people and explore space is still there. Although maybe the helping people might translate into fighting for justice not only with humans, but also with the space and life that us humans interact with. The goals and dreams of your childhood, no matter how unrealistic they may have been, and the events of your childhood definitely shape you are becoming.

And also I think watching this subconsiously inspired me to pursue a degree in Environmental Science.

Thanks for this post, it's wonderful to see that you have such strong ideas not necessarily about what you want to do career wise, but what you want to do in the world. Keep up the hard work! PS I wanted to be an astronaut too.
